With multiple goals in every period, the Des Moines Buccaneers topped the Waterloo Black Hawks 7-2 during a Tuesday night exhibition at Buccaneer Arena.
Brandon Schultz drew first blood and gave the Black Hawks an edge at 2:27 of the opening period, snapping a shot into the net from between the circles on a quick developing play. Less than three minutes later, Des Moines was back even; seconds after a power play ended, Georgy Gorodetsky put a low shot between the pipes from the left circle. Gorodetsky struck again with 1:42 remaining before intermission, making the most of a cross-ice pass in transition.
In the second, the Buccaneers stretched their lead to 4-1 at one point before the Hawks worked back to within two goals by intermission. Both Des Moines markers were scored from just outside the crease: the first by Derek Brown at 4:47 and the second by Patrick Grasso during a power play at 8:24. Waterloo’s goal also came on special teams when Hunter Luhmann dashed to the goalmouth to knock home a shorthanded rebound created by Blake Christensen at 16:00.
Des Moines extended the lead in the third with a tally by Kenny Hausinger at 4:33, followed by Grasso’s second of the night exactly eight minutes later. On a power play less than two minutes after that, Brendan Demler recorded the host’s final goal of the contest from the high slot.
The Hawks’ next exhibition challenge will be on the road Wednesday evening against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
