A two-goal second period by the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Friday propelled the visitors past the Waterloo Black Hawks at Young Arena, 3-1.
After the first scoreless period in which the Hawks have participated this preseason, the Fighting Saints broke through at 11:34 of the second during a power play when a deflected pass was flipped in from just outside the crease by Petter Makitalo. With four skaters per side, Dubuque made it 2-0 at 17:49; Casey Johnson snapped a shot into the net from between the hashmarks.
Waterloo answered before the four-on-four stretch ended. Just 57 second later, Liam Pecararo swiped the puck in the right wing corner and fed Michael Davies charging up the slot; the Hawks defenseman buried his chance from pointblank range to the glove side of Hunter Miska.
An empty net goal from Nathan Sucese with 18 seconds remaining in regulation capped the scoring.
The Black Hawks and Fighting Saints meet for an instant rematch on Saturday evening in Dubuque at 7:05 p.m.
