Postgame Recap: Hawks Comeback Comes Up Short

Aside from a half minute late in the second period, Green Bay Gamblers goaltender Adam Huska snuffed out everything which the Waterloo Black Hawks sent his way Saturday during a 3-2 Gambler win at the Resch Center.

Shortly after an early power play had ended, the Gamblers gave their netminder a lead to protect and notched the lone goal of the first period.  Ryan Smith’s shot from the left circle deflected off a defender and fluttered between the goal posts.

In the second, the Gambler scoring came early; the Black Hawks found the net late.  Cam Lee extended the Green Bay lead at 3:39 firing a shot under the crossbar which was in and out in the blink of an eye, but a conversation between the officials confirmed the goal.  One minute and 20 seconds later, Jack Poehling received the puck with room in the slot and fired his chance into the net.

The teams exchanged power play opportunities in the mid-second, but neither side could convert.  Green Bay turned aside two five-on-three chances, but the Hawks eventually broke through at even strength with 1:20 left before intermission as David Cotton found the net after a defender collided with Huska.  Just 30 seconds later, Nick Swaney came out of the left corner and slipped a shot across the goal line off a Green Bay skate.

After firing 18 shots on net in the second, the Hawks lobbed 15 more Huska’s way in the third.  However, the New York Rangers’ draft pick stopped them all, making 39 saves in the victory.  Cale Morris took the loss with 21 saves.

Saturday’s contest was the first of four straight on the road.  Next weekend, the Hawks visit the Siouxland to face the Sioux Falls Stampede on Friday and Saturday before visiting the Sioux City Musketeers on the way home Sunday.
