Postgame Recap: Just Out of Reach

After facing an early deficit, the Waterloo Black Hawks trailed the Sioux City Musketeers by five different one-goal margins Sunday before falling, 7-5, at Tyson Events Center.

The Musketeers came out at a fast clip, scoring twice in the first 3:25.  The opening goal was recorded after just 27 seconds when Josh Wilkins chopped in the rebound of a Jake Ryczek shot.  Sioux City struck again less than three minutes later, capitalizing on a turnover as Wilkins moved the disc to Teemu Pulkkinen, who lifted it in from close range.  Waterloo was able to draw one back during a power play at 18:21; David Cotton was camped at the front of the net where he was able to swat a chance past the left skate of goalie Evan Smith.

The teams scored at the same rate during the second, starting at 1:26 when Mitch Fossier’s power play chance was redirected in by Matt Steeves.  Nick Swaney answered two minutes later, squeezing a shot between the left arm and body of Smith.  However, Sioux City went back ahead by two at 14:31 when Jackson Keane blasted a shot off the crossbar and in on a transition chance.

Each team scored three in the third and the Musketeers remained just out of reach.  Mikey Anderson swept the puck between the pipes while falling to the ice at 2:26; Eeli Tolvanen answered on a power play just over four minutes later.  Cotton’s second of the game at 11:41 was created when Kevin Charyszyn delivered a big hit to free the puck behind the net, but the lead was re-extended just over a minute later on Pulkkinen’s second of the night.  With 3:45 remaining, Brandon Schultz gave the Hawks a last opportunity to draw level when he scored on a low chance; Steeves put the game out of reach scoring last into an empty net with just over a minute to play.

With the longest road trip of the season at an end, the Hawks return home Saturday to host the Omaha Lancers at 7:05.  After the game, Waterloo’s 2015 Breast Cancer Awareness jerseys – presented by Great Clips – will be auctioned with profits benefitting Beyond Pink TEAM.
