Postgame Recap: Hawks Seize Control in Second

A four-goal Waterloo Black Hawks second period sent the home team rolling toward a 6-0 win at Young Arena Friday against the Des Moines Buccaneers.

The Black Hawks lit the lamp shortly after their lone first period power play had ended.  Manning the right point, Mason Anderson fired a shot which was redirected just outside the crease by Garrett Wait at 11:45.  At the other end of the rink, Drew Hotte made a dozen saves during the opening period.

Although Waterloo led at intermission, they had been limited to just six shots in the opening frame.  In the second, the Hawks fired more than three times that number of chances and put the puck in the net four times.  The surge started at 1:41 when Yuri Terao capped a three-on-two rush with a tap-in goal from the top of the crease.  Then David Cotton cashed on a power play at 9:16, letting go a rocket from the top of the right circle, which just squeezed under the crossbar.

The onslaught continued at 14:55.  The Hawks capped a long sequence of offensive zone pressure when Wait came from behind the net to set the table for Collin Saccoman in the slot, and the first-year defenseman didn’t miss, squeezing a shot inside the post to the right of Nick MacNab.  Ronnie Hein added one more goal at 17:57, putting back the rebound from a Ben Newhouse shot.

Terao added one more at 1:59 of the third period, redirecting a long chance by Mikey Anderson.  The Bucs made a redoubled effort to push the puck across the goal line during the final 20 minutes, sending 13 shots toward Hotte, but none got by.  Hotte finished the evening with 30 saves.

Friday’s action concluded a stretch of four consecutive home games for the Waterloo.  The Black Hawks are on the road until Thanksgiving’s matchup against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.  The away sequence begins Saturday against the Omaha Lancers.
