Postgame Recap: Hawks Stifled in Second

A hat trick by Gordie Green and a four-goal Dubuque Fighting Saints second period were more than the Waterloo Black Hawks could overcome during a 7-4 loss Saturday at Mystique Ice Center.

The Hawks fired the first nine shots on goal during the game, but the Saints broke through for the opening goal during a power play at 10:19.  That’s when Green capitalized on a rebound which bounced he way left of the net.

Not quite five minutes later, Brandon Schultz’s shot caromed off goalie Hunter Miska and over the crossbar, but the puck bounced off the topside netting, back into the goalmouth, where David Cotton got the last touch to draw the game level.  However, at 16:55, Dubuque retook the lead when Nate Sucese capitalized off a pass which came his way out of the left corner.

Waterloo could not get back even during the second, despite a pair of power play goals.  Michael O’Leary stretched the Dubuque lead just after a Waterloo power play ended at 7:46, cashing in on an oddman rush.  Nick Swaney brought Waterloo back within one on an advantage at 10:02, but three minutes later, Green sent his second of the night under the crossbar.  Liam Pecararo again cut the deficit to one at 15:37, converting a power play opportunity from the right circle.  However, Green’s hat trick goal at 16:53 and another from Shane Kavanaugh with 12.9 seconds left in the period, put the Saints up 6-3 at intermission.

Yuri Terao scored on an odd-man rush with 6:39 remaining, but Trey Dodd ended comeback hopes with an empty-netter at 18:50.

Waterloo will play two against the Fargo Force next weekend, beginning with a Friday night matchup at Young Arena.  The first 500 fans in attendance will receive an alumni series collectable stadium cup featuring J.T. Brown, presented by Beck’s Taproom Grill and Hurricane Grill and Wings.  For tickets, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
