UPDATE: The deadline for participants to register for the Dainty Doggy Dash has been extended to 7 p.m. Saturday evening.
Paw Prints Pet Salon, NutriSource Sponsor Rechristened Event
For years, the dachshunds have had all the fun, but Thursday the Waterloo Black Hawks’ annual Dachshund Derby was turned upside-down by the announcement that the event has been renamed the Dainty Doggy Dash and opened to all fully-grown canines weighing 25 pounds or less, regardless of breed.
This year, the fur flies at Young Arena during intermission of the Black Hawks’ game on Saturday, January 9th against the Tri-City Storm at 7:05 p.m. As in previous years, registration is $10 per entry and will benefit the Cedar Bend Humane Society. The Dainty Doggy Dash is presented by Paw Prints Pet Salon in Waterloo and NutriSource Pet Foods.
“We looked at this race and said ‘Terriers are fast. Spaniels are speedy. Have you tried running away from a Yorkie?’ And we asked ourselves why all these great little dogs didn’t have the chance to take the ice,” said Waterloo Black Hawks Vice President of Business Operations Joe Greene. He added, “We hope that by opening up the field, this will be the best participation we’ve ever had, and we’ll be able to do some extra good for local pets in need.”
Registrations are requested by Wednesday, January 6th. All participating pooches will be monitored by Black Hawks staff at a check-in/check-out area throughout the entire evening. A kennel should be brought from home for each racer.
Each entered hound must be accompanied by two human representatives who will be on ice during the festivities. Game tickets will be available for $10 each for these assistants. For more information, please call the Black Hawks at (319) 232-3444.
