Cale Morris earned the 50th win of his United States Hockey League career as the Waterloo Black Hawks upended the Sioux Falls Stampede 4-1 at Young Arena Saturday.
Morris made 26 stops in the decision. It was his 10th win of the year and 29th as a Black Hawk following a trade which brought him from the Chicago Steel to Waterloo last January.
Lean Bergmann scooped in the first goal of the game, the only shot which eluded Morris during the matchup. At 11:00 of the first period, the Stampede forward capitalized on the rebound of a Justin Wells shot.
However, Nick Swaney notched the equalizer in transition at 14:47. His shot from near the top of the right circle hit a defender and fluttered over the shoulder of Sioux Falls netminder Stefanos Lekkas.
Two more goals were counted in the second, both to the Hawks. Brandon Schultz broke the 1-1 tie at 5:13, receiving a pass from Shane Bowers on a rush into the offensive zone and knocking the disc between the pipes. During a power play, David Cotton added an insurance goal, redirecting Tony Stillwell’s shot from the left point at 16:44.
Swaney added his second of the night and 20th of the season, lifting the puck from the left circle under the crossbar 1:40 into the third. Waterloo tightened up defensively from there, limiting the Stampede to just seven shots in the final period.
The Black Hawks complete their three game weekend on the road Sunday against the Sioux City Musketeers at 3:05 p.m. Saturday’s win coupled with a Sioux City loss moved Waterloo one point ahead of the Musketeers and into fourth place in the USHL Western Conference.
