The Waterloo Black Hawks shook off a 0-15-2 record when trailing at the second intermission this season, surging to a 3-2 win Sunday at Young Arena against the Sioux City Musketeers
Sioux City scored the only goal during the first two periods, capping a three-on-two transition up the ice. Trey Dodd found the puck in the slot and squeaked a low shot under Garrett Metcalf 5:07 into the game.
The Musketeers made Waterloo’s task doubly difficult by scoring a power play goal on Mitch Fossier’s redirection of a Jake Ryczek shot at 2:53 of the third.
It took just 88 seconds for the Waterloo rally to begin.
At 4:21, Kevin Charyszyn went dashing to the net and redirected a sailing centering pass from Marshall Moise, which had originated outside the left wing circle. Ronnie Hein then tied it for the home team during a power play at 11:57. Navigating across the bottom of the left circle, the Waterloo captain enticed goalie Cam Gornet to lunge at the puck before pulling it away and slipping it across the goal line.
The winning goal was conjured up by Liam Pecararo with 3:36 remaining. The veteran forward fished for his own rebound, then centered from behind the net for Collin Saccoman coming up the slot. Saccoman gave the Hawks the only lead they would need, knocking the puck between the pipes.
The victory was Metcalf’s first as a Black Hawk, and he made 21 saves to get it. Gornet finished on the short side, despite 36 stops.
The Hawks are now off until next weekend when they open a home-and-home series by visiting the Dubuque Fighting Saints Friday.
