Postgame Recap: Terao Assists Hawks Win

Three assists by forward Yuri Terao helped the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 5-2 victory against the Des Moines Buccaneers on Sunday at Young Arena.

Des Moines struck first at 7:36 on Zach Jordan’s wrist shot from the right circle.  However, Shane Bowers’ electrifying rush into the offensive zone provided the equalizer at 13:41.  Receiving a lead pass from Terao, Bowers dashed through Des Moines defenders, shifted the puck to his backhand, and trickled his opportunity past Jan Ruzicka.

Power play puck movement allowed Waterloo to break the tie at 11:21 of the second period.  After the puck came off the right boards and into the high slot, Mikey Anderson angled a pass to Terao at the bottom of the left circle.  In turn, Terao found David Cotton between the hash marks, and Cotton knocked in his chance, putting the Hawks ahead.

Des Moines leveled the count at 2:01 of the third when Justin Howell sprung into the Waterloo zone and wristed a shot past Cale Morris.  It was just over four minutes later that Waterloo reassumed the lead when Ronnie Hein redirected a Collin Saccoman shot into the net from beside the crease.

Terao generated an insurance goal with 8:27 remaining, giving the Hawks their first multigoal lead of the affair.  His faceoff win set up Zach Yon’s successful wrist shot from the right circle.  Georgs Golovkovs added an empty net goal with under five minutes to play and wrapped up the outcome.

Morris made 14 saves for the win.  Waterloo held the Bucs to six shots or fewer in every period.  Ruzicka turned away 35 shots in the loss.

Waterloo is on the road next weekend, visiting the Omaha Lancers on Saturday.  The next Hawks home game is March 11th against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
