Playoff Rematch to Start Home Schedule

The first hockey game in the Cedar Valley was played nearly 90 years ago; the first hockey game in the Cedar Valley during the 2016/17 season is scheduled for Saturday, October 8th against the Lincoln Stars, the United States Hockey League announced Tuesday.

The Black Hawks and Stars will face off in a rematch of a 2016 first round Clark Cup Playoff Series.  Waterloo prevailed in the best-of-five set, three games to one.  The series ended on Ronnie Hein’s breakaway goal in double-overtime to cap Game Four.  The Hawks and Stars have met during the postseason in two of the last five years.  During the 2015/16 regular season, the teams were separated by just two points in the Western Conference standings.

The Waterloo-Lincoln Young Arena-opener on October 8th will begin at 7:05.  Waterloo’s other 29 home games and 30-game road schedule will be announced by the USHL Wednesday.

On February 12, 1927, the first hockey game ever played in Waterloo was hosted by the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post at the National Cattle Congress Hippodrome.  Next February will be the milestone 90th anniversary of that contest.
