Waterloo Black Hawks Summer Update, July 25

The first games of the 2016/17 hockey season are only about two months away.  Stay up-to-date with the latest on what’s happening in Party Town.

• National and Local Camp – USA Hockey’s National Junior Evaluation Camp will be held in Plymouth, Michigan, beginning Saturday.  The weeklong event will be used to determine the roster for the United States squad participating in the World Junior Championships beginning in December.  Former Black Hawks Brock Boeser, Tom Novak, and Rem Pitlick will participate.  Closer to home, a variety of hockey camps in Waterloo kick off in early August, starting with the Black Hawks’ Futures Camp August 4th.

• Losing a Legend – Former Black Hawk Paul Johnson passed away last week at age 81.  A high-scoring forward at all levels, Johnson won gold during the 1960 Olympics, then USHL championships in Waterloo.  Check out his U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Bio here.

• On to Europe – Former Black Hawk captain Brett Olson will play in Europe this season with the EC Salzburg Red Bulls.  He has spent the last four winters in the American Hockey League.

• Icing Call – There is ice in place at Young Arena.  Building staff are building the base layers and before long, skaters will be out on the surface.  Meanwhile, the United States Hockey League schedule is being finalized; an announcement will be forthcoming in the near future.

• Host a Hawk – The Black Hawks are currently seeking host families for the 2016/17 season.  This is a unique way to support the team.  Housing stipends and discounted season tickets are among the benefits for participating families.  For more details, please call the team at 319.232.3444.

• Traveling Tommy – Look for Tommy Hawk in Evansdale on Saturday, July 30th.  He will be participating in the Evansdale Community Days Parade!  Racing fans might also see him in Newton later that day for the NASCAR event at Iowa Speedway.

• Summer Clearance – Show your Black Hawks colors this summer and save.  Stop by the Black Hawks offices at Young Arena Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to shop the Party Town Outfitters Summer Clearance.
