Doing More With Less

Hawks Fans Donate Mountain of School Supplies

In just one evening, Waterloo Black Hawks fans contributed substantially more school supplies than they did during two nights last August, the Hawks announced Tuesday.

Saturday, the team held its second school supply drive.  During a scrimmage, which highlighted the Hawks’ annual Orientation Camp, fans in attendance were invited to donate school supplies in lieu of admission.  Partnering with Courier Communications, this year’s effort yielded more donations than were collected in 2015 when the Hawks hosted two such events at Young Arena.

“Our entire organization is grateful that we can channel the generosity of Black Hawks supporters to local kids in need,” said Black Hawks Vice President of Sales and Marketing Joe Greene.  “We are really looking forward to delivering this sizable load and thank The Courier for helping to get the word out.”

This season’s effort collected 6,017 crayons, colored pencils, or markers, compared with 3,337 last August. Year-over-year, over 60 percent more standard No. 2 pencils were received, while 83 percent more notebooks were donated.  In all – counting composition books and packets of loose-leaf notebook paper – over 30,000 pages are headed to local classrooms.  Hundreds of pens and erasers, plus dozens of folders, bottles of glue, highlighters, and scissors will also find new homes.  Hawks fans also provided a number of backpacks and numerous other items.

Those who missed this weekend’s scrimmage but would still like to help make the beginning of the school year a little easier for less fortunate students are encouraged to drop off additional school supply donations at the Waterloo Community Schools’ central office at 1516 Washington Street.

The Black Hawks’ first exhibition game is scheduled for Tuesday, September 6th against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, beginning at 7:05 p.m.  Tickets will go on sale Monday, August 29th; all seats will be $7.  The 2016/17 regular season home schedule opens on October 8th versus the Lincoln Stars.  Single-game tickets for all regular season games will go on sale from the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office and online beginning September 1st.
