Black Hawks Prepare Opening Night Roster

Final roster moves have been completed ahead of the Waterloo Black Hawks’ first game of the 2016/17 United States Hockey League season on the road against the Des Moines Buccaneers Saturday.

Forward Nick Swaney and defenseman Jake Ryczek return to Waterloo; Swaney scored 30 goals during his first full USHL season last winter, while Ryczek was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2016 NHL Draft in June.  The Hawks’ squad will also include 2015/16 USHL All-Rookie Second Team selections Shane Bowers and Mikey Anderson.  In total, 11 members of the 2016/17 team currently have NCAA Division I college commitments.

Two new players who did not appear during the preseason will also join the Hawks in time for Saturday’s game.  Ethan Johnson was acquired from the Lincoln Stars.  Johnson played for Thief River Falls High School in Minnesota last season.  Waterloo also added former Muskegon Lumberjack defenseman Grant Gabriele.  The 19-year-old has appeared in over 100 USHL games, including stints with Team USA, the Chicago Steel, and the Omaha Lancers.
