Preseason Recap: Bucs Flip Score in Rematch

One night after the Waterloo Black Hawks had claimed a 5-2 exhibition road victory against the Des Moines Buccaneers, the tables were turned precisely at Young Arena Saturday.

In the opening period, the Bucs scored twice, with both goals originating behind the Waterloo net.  Collin Rutherford capitalized at 11:29 when a feed came to him at the top of the crease from that direction.  Then with 39.2 seconds remaining before intermission, Keenan Suthers banked a shot into the net from behind the cage.

A quiet second period belied a much more active third.  The Buccaneer lead ballooned to 4-0 on goals by Isaac Johnson and Kobe Roth separated by just 1:19.  Waterloo answered on an Emil Ohrvall redirection just 59 seconds after Roth had scored.  With 9:26 to play, Ace Cowans brought the Hawks back within two, lifting a shot to the top corner over the glove on Jan Ruzicka.

Although an end-to-end finish followed, the only goal in the remaining time came from David Keefer into an empty net with less than 20 seconds to go.

The two teams meet again next Saturday in Des Moines for the first game during the 2016/17 United States Hockey League regular season.
