Jackson Cates staked the Waterloo Black Hawks to a mid-first period lead Friday during the United States Hockey League Fall Classic West, and Waterloo stayed in front of the Des Moines Buccaneers through the end of a 5-2 victory.
Cates’ goal came at 11:20, and was followed by a Logan Jenuwine tally with two minutes remaining before intermission. The Bucs drew back within one when Tommy Parrottino scored in the final minute of the period.
Goals during the middle 20 minutes from Joey Strada and Nick Swaney allowed Waterloo to build a comfortable cushion, even after Des Moines’ Nick Leitner found the net past the midpoint of the third period. Kevin Charyszyn added an empty-netter.
The Hawks complete their stint at the Fall Classic on Saturday evening against the Tri-City Storm.
