Preseason Recap: Hawks Have It Going

A three goal middle frame opened the path to a 5-2 Waterloo Black Hawks road exhibition victory against the Des Moines Buccaneers Friday at Buccaneer Arena.

The Hawks notched the only goal of the first period following two successful penalty kills.  At 14:05, defenseman Peter Tabor cruised toward the high slot.  His wrist shot was redirected into the net by Logan Jenuwine, low to the glove side of goaltender Jake Kucharski.

Joe Kinsella set the tone for a busy second period, scoring from the right point on a shot through traffic just 19 seconds after the puck dropped.  Jack Drury added another Hawks score, banging in a rebound during a delayed penalty situation just 1:31 later.  Des Moines’ Chris Berger capped the early flurry with a goal while left alone in the right circle during a power play at 4:11.

After a Des Moines penalty shot was off the mark, Gage Mackie lit the lamp for the Hawks moments later, capping an odd-man rush with a score from close range at 13:28.  However, the Bucs recorded the final tally before the break when Julian Napravnik slapped in a one-timer created on a feed across the slot.

Jackson Cates capped the scoring with the only goal of the third period, lifting a shot to the top short side corner at 13:02.

Waterloo and Des Moines meet for an instant rematch at Young Arena on Saturday at 7:05.  All seats for the final game on the preseason schedule are just $7.  To order, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or visit
