Preseason Recap: Hawks Rap RoughRiders

Three third period goals gave the Waterloo Black Hawks a come-from-behind 5-3 exhibition win against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on the road Tuesday.

Yuki Miura notched the game-winner with 4:18 to go, controlling a puck which bounded hit way into the slot in transition, then lifting a shot to the stick side of Zack Larocque.  Nick Swaney sealed the win with an empty-netter as 44.7 seconds showed on the clock.

Ace Cowans had scored the only goal of the first period at 17:22, with one second remaining on a major Cedar Rapids penalty.  Receiving an Emil Ohrvall pass which zipped from the right to left wing circle below the dots, Cowans squeaked a shot past Larocque and across the goal line.

A miscue in the neutral zone allowed the RoughRiders to tie the score at 1:51 of the second, with Marc McLaughlin cutting through the left circle to stuff in a chance from just outside the goalmouth.  The goal set off a sequence of early second period scoring, followed at 4:10 when the RoughRiders took their first lead on a power play redirection by Pavel Tkachkov.  Swaney tied it again for Waterloo 26 later, batting a chance in out of midair.

Following a lull, Cedar Rapids pulled back in front at 17:30 when Cal Johnson snapped a stick-side wrist shot into the net from above the left dot.

When the Hawks tied it early in the third, Ohrvall was the beneficiary of a similar pass to the one he had made earlier in the game.  During a power play at 1:14, he capitalized from the right circle when the puck came his direction across the width of the ice.

The Hawks wrap up the preseason with a home-and-home weekend set beginning Friday on the road against the Des Moines Buccaneers.
