Preseason Recap: Low-Scoring Start

Goals in the final four minutes of the first and third periods kept the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders ahead of the Waterloo Black Hawks, 2-1, in the exhibition opener for both teams Tuesday.

Matt Gosiewski opened the scoring with 3:29 remaining in the first period, snapping a shot to the short side to cap an odd-man rush. Cedar Rapids made the score 2-0 almost exactly 40 minutes later at 16:38 of the third, thanks to a redirection by Sam Sternschein on a shot through traffic.

The Hawks capitalized for their lone goal thanks to a two-on-one at 18:39. Ben Copeland slipped a pass to Garrett Klee on left wing. Klee lifted his chance into the net, high to the stick side.

Waterloo returns to action Thursday during the USHL Fall Classic West, matching up against the Sioux City Musketeers. The Hawks’ final exhibition home game will be on September 17th versus the Des Moines Buccaneers.
