Honoring Breast Cancer Patients, Survivors

Pink in the Rink Planned for October 22nd

The Waterloo Black Hawks unveiled their 2016 edition breast cancer awareness jerseys on Monday, in preparation for “Pink in the Rink” presented by Great Clips and the Breast Care Center on Saturday, October 22nd when the Muskegon Lumberjacks visit Young Arena.

This will mark the fifth consecutive season in which the Hawks have worn a pink breast cancer awareness jersey during at least one October home game.  Each year, the sweaters have been auctioned with profits benefitting local breast cancer patients and survivors through Beyond Pink TEAM.  Jersey auction proceeds have been the largest component in over $30,000 generated by Black Hawks fans for the Cedar Valley-based organization over the last four seasons.

“There are a lot of pieces which fit together so well to make this a great partnership,” said Black Hawks Vice President of Sales and Marketing Joe Greene.  “We are grateful to Great Clips and the Breast Care Center, and certainly to Black Hawks fans, for all playing their part to make this effort so successful.  Most of all, we are inspired by the determined stories of recovery to which Beyond Pink TEAM has contributed.”

The “TEAM” acronym stands for Taking action-Educating-Advocating-Making a difference.  Beyond Pink TEAM offers support, encourages screening, and provides other services to breast cancer patients in northeast Iowa.

This fall – for the first time – the auction will not immediately follow the game during which the jerseys will be worn; fans will instead have the opportunity to take home their game-worn 2016 breast cancer awareness jersey on Friday, October 28th after Waterloo’s game against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.  In addition, anytime a pink Black Hawks item is purchased from Party Town Outfitters during the month of October, a portion of the sale will be included in this season’s donation.

The 2016 breast cancer awareness jersey features a gradient pink-with-pinstripes design, lightening toward the waist and sleeve cuffs.  A Black Hawks logo appears on the chest within a curling pink ribbon.  White numbers outlined in black appear on the back of the sweater, as well as on each sleeve below a black shoulder panel.

Tickets for the Hawks’ Pink in the Rink game are currently available from the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office and through the online ordering page at waterlooblackhawks.com.  For more information, call the box office at (319) 291-7680.
