The Salvation Army Opens Holiday Effort During November 5th Game
When rivers came out of their banks in northeast Iowa during August and September, The Salvation Army was on hand within hours to provide food, drinking water, and emotional support to flood victims thanks to donations given during the organization’s annual holiday collection last winter.
In preparation for another year of service, the 2016 Red Kettle Campaign in the Cedar Valley officially begins on Saturday, November 5th during the Waterloo Black Hawks’ game against the Youngstown Phantoms at Young Arena.
“We were proud to partner with The Salvation Army for this event in 2015, and after everything which has happened on the Cedar River and other rivers in the area during the last several weeks, the Waterloo Black Hawks have an even deeper appreciation for this wonderful organization,” said Vice President of Business Operations Joe Greene. “I encourage everyone in northeast Iowa to show their community spirit by coming out to support The Salvation Army.”
Besides emergency intervention, The Salvation Army of Waterloo/Cedar Falls also provides meals, children’s programs, shelter, and more to those in need within the community. The Red Kettle Campaign – the largest single source of funding for the organization – has a local goal of $683,000 this winter.
“Each year, many small contributions help The Salvation Army,” noted Major Harold Poff. “The number always looks big, but when everyone plays a small part, it is amazing what is possible.”
All Cedar Valley residents are also encouraged to consider a Red Kettle Season Pass; those making a $100, $50, or $20 donation will receive a season pass pin demonstrating their support for the less fortunate. These can be purchased at any Hy-Vee store in Waterloo or Cedar Falls. Finally, fans have the chance to purchase a discounted ticket which will allow a child served by The Salvation Army’s programs to attend the Kettle Kickoff game. The goal is to provide seats for 50 kids to attend.
During the November 5th event, the 2016 Red Kettle Campaign will officially begin with the ceremonial puck drop prior to the game. Black Hawks fans will also see the first-ever kettle curling challenge on ice at intermission. Hawks mascot Tommy Hawk is also sure to be in on the fun.
Later in November, Black Hawks players will also be ringing bells and standing beside kettles in front of local stores; specific dates, times, locations, and participating players will be released at a later date.
