Note: The Black Hawks’ first goal was originally credited to Kevin Charyszyn, but changed in postgame after a video review.
Kevin Charyszyn scored on the power play and shorthanded as the Waterloo Black Hawks moved to first place in the United States Hockey League Western Conference with a 5-2 Thursday night road win against the Lincoln Stars.
Moments after a first period Lincoln penalty ended, Mikey Anderson’s shot from the blue line found the net for the opening goal at 8:56. Anderson was involved in another Black Hawks goal – this time within a power play – with 16.1 remaining before intermission. Anderson kept a clearing attempt in the zone on the left boards and swung a pass to Garrett Wait in the opposite circle. Wait sent a pass back across the slot to the side of the net, where Charyszyn stuffed it in.
Between those two tallies, Jake Nielsen found his way behind the Hawks defense to score at 15:04.
Garrett Klee added a second period goal at 3:07. Wait reversed course behind the Lincoln net, turning back to feed Klee in the left circle. From there, Klee surprised goalie Cayden Primeau, who was trying to scurry from post to post.
Nick Swaney scored shorthanded at 6:11 to build the Black Hawks margin; Wait set up the tally from behind the Lincoln net for his fourth assist of the game. Charyszyn completed the effort, also shorthanded, at 16:03, getting to a loose puck first and shoveling it in. Henry Bowlby got one back for the Stars on a rush during a five-on-three power play with 1:32 to remaining.
The Hawks and Stars meet again Saturday for the first game of the season at Young Arena at 7:05. It’s Pokemon Go Night, with special prizes for players of the digital game. Tickets are also discounted for college students, and the first 2,000 fans will receive a 2016/17 Black Hawks Magnetic Schedule.
