Postgame Recap: Hawks Get Dakota Double

The Waterloo Black Hawks picked up all four possible points from their two-game weekend trip to the Dakotas, upending the Sioux Falls Stampede 5-2 on Friday at Sanford Premier Center.

Each team recorded a first period power play goal.  The scoring started at 14:01 when the Stampede’s Max Johnson lifted a shot from the right circle past Robbie Beydoun’s left shoulder.  However, with 55.6 seconds to go in the period, Michael Ferrandino set up an Emil Ohrvall one-timer from below the right faceoof dot.  Ohrvall’s blast beat Jeremy Swayman, who was sliding to his left.

The Hawks struck for a pair of goals during the first six minutes of the middle period.  Kevin Charyszyn gave the visitors their first lead at 3:35, flipping a long shot into the net from the right circle.  Nick Swaney added to the lead less than two minutes later, catching Jake Ryczek’s long pass near the Stampede blue line, cutting to the slot, and firing his chance past Swayman from close range.

Waterloo’s lead ballooned to three goals when Shane Bowers capitalized shorthanded on a setup by Swaney at 6:23 of the third period.  Bowers added another point to his total on a rush at 11:54, dropping a pass to Ohrvall who buried his second of the contest.  In between the Hawks’ two third period goals, Jack Doremus stuffed in a Sioux Falls tally at 8:13.

Friday, Waterloo had prevailed in North Dakota, 2-0 against the Fargo Force to start the weekend.

The Hawks complete a season-opening four-game road swing Thursday against the Lincoln Stars.  Waterloo and Lincoln then meet for a Saturday rematch in the home opener at Young Arena.
