Nick Swaney’s power play goal in the first minute of overtime hoisted the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 3-2 comeback win against the Green Bay Gamblers Friday at Young Arena.
The decisive goal came after a first chance was batted out of the crease to Swaney in the right circle. The Hawks played the puck around the perimeter and back, with Waterloo’s leading scorer eventually backpedaling toward the hashmark before lifting his chance under the crossbar at 57 seconds of the extra period.
Following a scoreless first 20 minutes, each team had found the net twice in the second. Garrett Wait counted the first tally in transition for the Hawks, lifting a shot over the left shoulder of David Hrenak at 6:38. Green Bay answered at 8:41 during a power play, as Matt Jennings flipped the puck in from the right circle.
Just over two minutes later, the visitors went in front when Jason Dhooghe swatted in the rebound of a Matt Berkovitz shot. Green Bay led for much of the time which remained in the period, however the game went to intermission tied, thanks to Mason Palmer. With 30.1 seconds remaining before the break, Palmer was the trailer on a rush and capitalized from the high slot on Swaney’s setup.
Waterloo outshot Green Bay 42-26. Robbie Beydoun made 24 saves in the win. Hrenak stopped 39 attempts.
