Connor Ford broke a 1-1 tie eight minutes into the third period, lifting the Sioux City Musketeers to a 2-1 Veteran’s Day win against the Waterloo Black Hawks at Young Arena.
Ford went to the net as the Musketeers came up the ice in transition. Phil Knies created an initial chance, and Ford knocked in the rebound at 8:00.
Matiss Kivlenieks made that goal stand up. The Musketeer goalie stopped a dozen chances in the final period and 44 for the night.
The only goal during the first period had been scored at 3:47. After a rebound slipped out of the Waterloo goalmouth, Micah Miller pounced and flipped in a second chance from the left wing circle.
Bailey Conger found the equalizer at the front of the Musketeers net 12:06 into the second period. That’s where he redirected Mason Palmer’s shot past Kivlenieks. The Hawks believed they had taken the lead during the final minute before intermission, but a puck knocked in by Kevin Charyszyn was ruled to have been touched by a high stick, and therefore no goal.
The Black Hawks are on the road Saturday against the USHL’s best early season team, the Chicago Steel. Waterloo’s next home game will be next Friday against the Green Bay Gamblers.
