Annual Event Presented by K98.5 FM
The roots of the Waterloo Black Hawks’ Thanksgiving game stretch back more than 50 years, and for nearly two decades, fans have participated in a tradition which ripples far beyond Young Arena regardless of the final score.
The Hawks’ annual Teddy Bear Toss, presented by K98.5 “Continuous Country Favorites,” will be part of Thursday’s festivities when Waterloo hosts the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. This year, the game will begin at 7:05 p.m.; gates open at 6:05.
“Fans anticipate the Teddy Bear Toss just as much as the game itself,” noted Waterloo Black Hawks Vice President of Sales and Marketing Joe Greene. “As the holiday season begins, we are proud to offer this outlet to the Cedar Valley to help make the winter a little brighter for less fortunate kids.”
Bears and other plush toys collected during the Teddy Bear Toss will be donated to Toys for Tots. Fans and players alike will eagerly await the start of the stuffed animal shower, which will begin when the Black Hawks score their first goal of the night. A limited number of teddy bears will also be available from the Express Employment Professionals Fan Service table for a $2 donation to Toys for Tots.
In addition to the Teddy Bear Toss, after the game has concluded fans are encouraged to stay for a live auction of the 1927 replica Waterloo jerseys which the Hawks wore on Veteran’s Day. The sweaters, modeled after those worn by the Becker-Chapman American Legion hockey club, are being sold to benefit Americans for Independent Living, a Waterloo-based organization which builds or modifies homes for veterans who have sustained major injuries while serving in the Armed Forces.
This first contest of the season versus the RoughRiders is also part of the DUPACO Cowbell Cup Series.
Good seats for the Thanksgiving game are still available from the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office. To place an order, call (319) 291-7680 or visit waterlooblackhawks.com.
