Postgame Recap: Hawks Reach 900

A three-goal second period on the road at Viaero Center in Kearney, Nebraska sent the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 4-1 victory against the Tri-City Storm on Friday.

The decision was the 900th regular season win for the Hawks since the United States Hockey League became an all-junior circuit in 1979.  Goaltender Robbie Beydoun has eight of those this season.  He made 28 saves, including a dozen in the third period.

It was a scoreless game until the six minute mark of the second when Ace Cowans redirected Hank Sorensen’s right point shot past Dayton Rasmussen.

Waterloo’s power play unit did the rest of the damage before intermissionwith two goals.  Nick Swaney stuffed the puck into the net at 13:53 as Emil Ohrvall threaded a pass to him from across the slot.  At 18:02, it was Ohrvall cashing in, flipping his own rebound past Rasmussen’s left skate.

During the third, Swaney recorded his second of the game at 3:17.  A Shane Bowers takeaway created the chance, and Swaney capitalized when the puck vanished momentarily in the crease, reappearing right in front of Waterloo’s leading scorer.

Danny DeGrande broke up Beydoun’s shutout bid with 6:30 to go, redirecting a shot by Jace Foskey.

The Hawks and Storm meet again Saturday.  The puck drops at 3:05 p.m.
