Postgame Recap: Hawks Win on the Homefront

Kevin Charyszyn’s dazzling move in overtime capped a 3-2 Waterloo Black Hawks home win Friday against the USHL Western Conference-leading Sioux City Musketeers at Young Arena.

Backing Sioux City’s Carson Vance inside the blue line 4:41 into extra time, Charyszyn navigated left, around the defender, inside the edge of the circle, and to the top of the crease.  Once there, he flipped a backhander off the toe of his stick under the crossbar to give the Hawks the victory.

Although the home team never trailed during the game, the Hawks were outshot in two of three periods and by a final count of 29-22.  Goaltender Robbie Beydoun made 27 saves for the win.

The Musketeers had two power plays during the first six minutes of action and were responsible for the first eight shots of the game, but Waterloo scored the first goal.  Ace Cowans left a puck near the top of the right circle for Hank Sorensen, who unloaded over the right shoulder of Matiss Kivlenieks at 12:10.  However, Sioux City tied the count not quite three minutes later; a turnover forced by Jackson Keane set up Kristian Pospisil from close range.

Netmouth pressure created the only goal of the second period at 9:25.  The puck rolled out of traffic back to the high slot for a shot by Mason Palmer.  The chance was turned away but left Shane Bowers with an open side; Bowers lifted his chance past Kivlenieks.

Sioux City tied again it at 2:12 of the third when Cole Koepke scored in transition.

The Hawks’ final pre-Christmas home game is Saturday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints.  The first 500 kids age 4-12 in attendance will receive a free kids jersey presented by SCHEELS, KWWL, and 107.3 The Party.  For tickets, call the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or visit
