Postgame Recap: Third Period Not Enough

The Black Hawks twice drew within a goal Saturday, but the Dubuque Fighting Saints outdistanced Waterloo in a 3-2 decision at Young Arena.

Trailing 2-0 when the final period began, Bailey Conger capitalized on a purloined puck, stepping through the left circle to the net mouth and lifting a shot under the crossbar at 2:04.  The visitors went back to a two-goal lead when Regen Cavanagh converted a rebound during a four-on-four sequence seven minutes later.

Kevin Charyszyn lifted hopes with a Waterloo power play goal as 3:45 remained.  In the wake of a Dubuque major penalty, the Waterloo veteran split defenders before sending a low shot through the pads of Jaxon Castor.  However, a subsequent offsetting call erased much of the remaining Black Hawks power play time, effectively stifling the comeback.

Waterloo had taken the first five shots on goal during the opening period, but Dubuque had seven of the final eight prior to intermission, including the only goal.  Quinn Preston forced a takeaway on the right wing boards, then moved the puck to Alex Steeves, who was unmarked in the slot.  Steeves flipped his shot in at 10:21.

The Saints struck again for the only goal of the second at 2:55.  With traffic in front of the goal, Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup lifted a shot over Robbie Beydoun’s glove while the Waterloo goalie was screened.

The Hawks will now begin a five-game road stretch starting against the Force Friday in Fargo.  The next home game at Young Arena will be New Year’s Eve at 6:05 p.m. versus the Madison Capitols.
