Robbie Beydoun made 21 saves for his 13th win of the season, and the Waterloo Black Hawks picked up a Friday the 13th road win against the Omaha Lancers, 2-1 at Ralston Arena.
Beydoun’s second period was sparkling. He made eight saves, highlighted by a blocker side denial of Pierce Crawford on an odd-man rush three minutes into the period. He followed up with strong glove saves on Ben Lown and Erlends Klavins just over two minutes later.
Trailing 1-0 at the start of the frame, Waterloo tied the game in the second and played through a scoreless third, setting up the Hawks’ league-leading tenth overtime of the season.
The game ended with 30.1 seconds to go in the extra period. Playing three-on-three, Kevin Charyszyn crossed the Lancer blue line above the right circle. The veteran navigated the deep slot and let fly a wrist shot from the left hash mark. The puck zipped over Tommy Napier’s shoulder and under the crossbar. It was Charyszyn’s second overtime winner of the season.
The only goal of the first period had come from a sharp angle during a Lancers power play at 13:22. Filip Rydstrom was right of the goal along the icing line and put a low shot into the crease and between the pipes on a deflection.
Waterloo answered in kind during the second period. Chase Pilawski’s shot flew wide of the net, but the puck caromed to Emil Ohrvall. From close range, the forward flipped his chance past Napier for the equalizer at 14:44.
The Black Hawks’ busy weekend continues on Saturday in Dubuque against the Fighting Saints. Waterloo then returns home Sunday to meet the Des Moines Buccaneers at 3:05 p.m.
