Postgame Recap: Hawks Suffer Shootout Setback

Jason Polin and Jordan Timmons each scored in regulation, then converted shootout opportunities to lift the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders to a 5-4 victory against the Waterloo Black Hawks at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena Saturday.

Ethan Johnson had opened the tie-breaker by converting the Black Hawks’ first attempt. However, Polin and Timmons finished their chances, while Drew DeRidder denied the next two Waterloo looks. DeRidder’s win was achieved with 23 saves.

Bailey Conger had recorded the only goal of the first period, 4:21 into the game. During a Black Hawks power play, a deflected shot trickled to Conger beside the net and he put it past DeRidder’s right pad. Robbie Beydoun preserved the lead two minutes later, denying Cedar Rapids’ best chance of the period. It came when a clearing attempt took a strange hop off the glass and landed in the slot in front of Timmons. Beydoun smothered the resulting opportunity from close range.

Cedar Rapids tied the game at 8:47 of the second when Timmons fired his shot from the left circle to the top corner.

Two goals in 37 seconds allowed Waterloo to surge back in front. The first at 8:47 was a slam dunk by Emil Ohrvall on Ace Cowans’ centering feed. The second was a blast from the right circle by Jake Ryczek, set up by Conger.

Before the period ended, the RoughRiders evened the count. Twenty-seven seconds after Ryczek’s goal, Polin got one back as Cedar Rapids stormed the Hawks’ zone. Bobby Hampton then tied it with a backhander at 17:18.

Ryczek put Waterloo in position to win with 1:20 remaining in regulation, firing a power play goal into the net from the high slot. However, with 31.4 seconds to go, Scott Perunovich leveled the score again as his shot found the net from the top of the left circle.

The Hawks’ next game will also be on the road, when Waterloo travels to Omaha to face the Lancers Friday.
