A dramatic end to regulation pushed the Waterloo Black Hawks and Sioux Falls Stampede to overtime Saturday at Young Arena, but the home comeback was beaten back, and the visitors still prevailed, 3-2 during extra time.
For more than half the night, the Hawks trailed their guests, 2-1. With 57.9 seconds remaining, Nick Swaney went to the side of the net before dropping the puck back into the goalmouth. On the ensuing scramble, Ben Copeland pushed it across the goal line to tie the score.
However, the Stampede’s Matthew Quercia lifted in the game-winning goal from the left circle in transition 3:09 into the extra period.
The Stampede had capitalized on a power play for the game’s first goal 7:06 into the action. When the puck was dislodged from the right boards, it was fed across the slot to Colin Swoyer, who stepped up from the left point and beat Robbie Beydoun with a low shot.
Waterloo got the goal back just after a power play ended. At 14:19, Bailey Conger’s pass took a fortuitous bounce to Kevin Charyszyn in the slot. The Hawks’ veteran took a stride to his left and snapped a wrist shot past Mikhail Berdin’s stick side.
Sioux Falls retook the lead 4:59 into the second during a five-on-three power play. Jack Becker redirected Swoyer’s left point into the cage.
Two spectacular third period saves by Beydoun allowed the game to reach the end of regulation on level terms. The netminder denied Josh Passolt’s shorthanded breakaway with a left pad save at the nine minute mark. The same one-on-one matchup went Beydoun’s way just before time expired.
Beydoun made 32 saves in the overtime loss, while Berdin turned away 34 shots for the win.
