Kevin Charyszyn scored a goal in each period during the Waterloo Black Hawks’ 5-2 win against the Sioux Falls Stampede at Young Arena Friday.
The 20-year-old now has a team-high 21 goals this season. The win kept Waterloo in second place in the United States Hockey League Western Conference, one point behind the Sioux City Musketeers.
The Stampede scored on their first shot of the game at 9:03 of the opening period when it looked like a rush had stalled just inside the Waterloo blue line. Jack Doremus caught up with a loose puck in the right circle, lifting a shot to the opposite top corner.
The Hawks evened the count at 14:32, just three seconds into a power play. Charyszyn won the faceoff, then went to the net to redirect Mikey Anderson’s shot past Jeremy Swayman.
Waterloo went in front with two second period goals. Charyszyn bagged his second of the game from the right circle on a cross-slot pass from Bailey Conger at 4:39.
The Hawks then built their lead while the Stampede were in the midst of their first power play. Garrett Klee knocked the puck away inside of his own zone, gaining possession in the center circle. In on a breakaway, Klee beat Swayman with a shorthanded backhander at 12:14.
Charyszyn completed his hat trick during a power play at 4:41 of the third. Moving across the slot, the rebound of a Garrett Wait shot came to his forehand, and he lifted the puck past Swayman’s stick side.
The 4-1 score held until 16:56 when Vitaliy Novytskyy snuck in from the right point to sweep a Lean Bergmann feed across the goal line. However, Shane Bowers sealed the win, scoring into an empty net from the Sioux Falls blue line with 3.7 seconds remaining.
The Hawks continue their late February homestand Sunday at 3:05 against the Lincoln Stars. Fans in attendance for the matinee will have the chance to meet characters from Toy Story, presented by U.S. Bank, and after the game, skate with the team.
