Hawks Fans to Help the Cedar Valley’s Homeless
The Waterloo Black Hawks will host their inaugural “Socks for Sail” event at Young Arena this Saturday, presented by Chick-fil-A, when the Omaha Lancers visit for a 7:05 p.m. matchup.
Fans in attendance are encouraged to bring new, unworn pairs of socks for men, women, or children to Party Town. When the Hawks record their first goal of the game, those socks will “sail” onto the ice from all around the rink, to be collected and donated to House of Hope and The Cedar Valley Hospitality House, which both serve the homeless of Black Hawk County.
“The homeless wear out their shoes and socks very quickly as they walk everywhere, even in cold, wet weather,” said Hospitality House volunteer Nancy Warnke. “There is a great need to offer dry socks to help the homeless stay warm.”
The Cedar Valley Hospitality House is a daytime shelter in Waterloo open year round from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The organization provides morning and afternoon meals, access to shower and laundry facilities, clothing, social advocacy, and other services from its location at 1003 Mulberry Street.
House of Hope is a two-year transitional program for homeless single women with children, offering support and personalized case management to help them change their lives and sustainably achieve independence and self-sufficiency.
“So many of us are blessed in ways that we take for granted,” said Waterloo Black Hawks Vice President of Sales and Marketing Joe Greene. “A simple thing like a pair of socks can make life better for people right here in our community. I know many of our fans will want to join Chick-fil-A and the Black Hawks as part of ‘Socks for Sail’ to help make a difference.”
The “Socks for Sail” goal is to collect 500 pairs of socks during Saturday’s contest.
In addition, Chick-fil-A will provide 500 “mini moo” plush toys to toss onto the ice at the same time for the benefit of kids served by the Boy’s & Girl’s Club. Chick-fil-A staff will also be on hand with a promotional prize wheel, providing an opportunity for fans to win free Chick-fil-A items from their location at 1331 Flamming Drive in Waterloo.
The Black Hawks’ game against the Lancers is part of a College Weekend, highlighted by $8 tickets for students ($7 when purchased in advance) with college ID.
