Karen’s Print Rite presents an update on top performances by former Black Hawks each week with the Alumni Three Stars of the Week feature.
#3 – Max Coatta
Minnesota State-Mankato Mavericks (NCAA) • Forward
Postseason college hockey has arrived for the Mavericks, who continue playing thanks in part to Coatta’s contribution in the clinching game of a best-of-three WCHA series. The Alaska Nanooks visited Mankato, and the Mavericks took Game One, 3-0. In Game Two, Coatta assisted on a first period goal which made the score 1-0. It was 2-1 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation when he scored himself to help put the game out of reach. Adding an empty-netter with 16 seconds to go, Coatta capped the Minnesota State-Mankato victory.
#2 – Joe Pavelski
San Jose Sharks (NHL) • Forward
Don’t underestimate the importance of an empty-net goal. Monday, Pavelski scored one which proved to be the difference in a 3-2 decision against the Winnipeg Jets. The San Jose captain’s second goal of the night was recorded with 26 seconds to play, but it became the game-winner when the Jets found the net 19 seconds later. Linemate Joe Thornton particularly benefitted from Pavelski hitting the open net. An assist on the play was the 1,000th of Thornton’s NHL career. The Sharks currently lead the Pacific Division by seven points.
#1 – Tyler Sheehy
Minnesota Gophers (NCAA) • Forward
The Gophers’ weekend began with a tough road loss at Michigan. Sheehy managed an assist in the 5-3 result. By rebounding for a win Saturday, the Gophers kept sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. Sheehy assisted on Rem Pitlick’s first period goal, then made it a 2-0 game midway through the second period. Ahead 3-1 in the third, the sophomore all but ended the Wolverine’s comeback hopes with an empty-netter at 18:08. That goal was his 20th of the season, giving Sheehy a four-point weekend.
