Bailey Conger stacked up three points, and the Waterloo Black Hawks never trailed during a 5-3 win against the Dubuque Fighting Saints Friday at Mystique Ice Center.
The goal lamp was lit just once during the first period, and that happened 22 seconds after the opening faceoff. Kevin Charyszyn cut through the left circle for a sharp-angle chance which was turned away. However the rebound went directly into the slot, leaving Conger standing between the hashmarks and an open net.
The second period could not have been more different from the first as the two teams each scored three times. Dubuque tied the game at 2:41 on a Hawks miscue which left Scott Corbett between the circles for a low shot inside the post at Peter Thome’s right. Waterloo answered with two goals separated by just over a minute. Shane Bowers redirected a Mikey Anderson shot immediately after a faceoff win at 4:43. Then at 5:47, Garrett Wait stuffed in the rebound of a Conger transition chance.
Dubuque brought the margin back to one at 7:28 on an Austin Rueschhoff wrister from the right circle. However, the Hawks reestablished a two-goal lead during a four-on-four sequence when Alex Limoges set up Ethan Spaxman moving in from the left point; Spaxman fired his shot to the top corner at 10:56.
The Saint got the deficit back to one at 17:15 when Jacob Hamacher put the puck in off the post.
The third period was nearly a replay of the first. Waterloo recorded the only goal early, then kept the Saints off the scoreboard. Charyszyn deflected Jake Ryczek’s shot into the net at 1:18 during a power play.
Thome denied eight Dubuque chances during the final period, making his best save on Corbett with under eight minutes to play. Moving from left to right, Thome soaked up the forward’s close-range redirection. For the night, the Waterloo netminder made 23 saves.
