Hawks and Panthers Fans Can Help Book Drive
During Saturday’s Panther Pride Night when the Waterloo Black Hawks host the Dubuque Fighting Saints at Young Arena, fans in attendance are encouraged to support a group of University of Northern Iowa students in their “Panthers for Pages” mission.
Members of the UNI Presidential Scholars created the “Panthers for Pages” book drive in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa. From now through April 3rd, the Scholars’ goal is to collect 250 books for students in the Waterloo Community School District. The group is specifically seeking titles at or above an upper elementary reading level. The books will be given to students in fourth grade up through high school.
“The people of Waterloo have channeled their generosity through the Black Hawks when we collected school supplies in the preseason, teddy bears at Thanksgiving, socks for the homeless last month, and more,” said Waterloo Black Hawks Vice President of Business Operations Joe Greene. “Between the Black Hawks and Panther fans who will be here at the rink, I predict we will collect all 250 books on Saturday night alone.”
WCSD students will be able to take donated books home and keep them, in addition to reading the books at school. The group is also accepting monetary donations. If you are unable to attend Saturday’s game, other Panthers for Pages drop-off locations are:
In Waterloo – Westminster Presbyterian Church, Waterloo Public Library, Rotary Club of Waterloo, and the studios of News/Talk 1540 KXEL-AM.
In Cedar Falls – Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church, Lincoln Savings Bank, and Farmer’s State Bank.
In Waverly – Waverly Public Library.
Monetary donations are also being accepted online through Big Brothers Big Sisters at www.tinyurl.com/Panthersforpages.
During the Hawks’ 2nd Annual Panther Pride Night on Saturday, admission for those in attendance with a UNI student or staff ID will be just $7. Orders are being accepted currently at the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office, which can be reached at (319) 291-7680.
