Postgame Recap: Game Two Goes to Hawks

The Waterloo Black Hawks protected home ice advantage during their opening round Clark Cup playoff series against the Fargo Force, claiming the second game in the best-of-five set, 4-1 at Young Arena Saturday.

The Hawks now have a two-games-to-none lead after rallying from behind to take Game One 4-3 in overtime Friday.

Late-season addition Dylan Samberg recorded the only goal of the first period Saturday.  The defenseman capitalized at 11:48 when Alex Limoges dropped the puck to him above the right hashmark.  Samberg’s shot beat Ryan Bischel to the netminder’s blocker side.

Ethan Johnson added to the lead at 12:34 of the second.  Two Jackson Cates chances were denied, but Johnson dashed toward the netmouth off a change and flipped in the rebound of Cates’ second try to double the margin.

While the Hawks were on a late second period power play, Robbie Beydoun made a pair of strong saves on shorthanded Force transition opportunities.  Blake Lizotte had a breakaway from the red line with 40 seconds left before intermission; Beydoun denied Fargo’s leading scorer on a low shot aimed at the five-hole.  Then with 12.9 seconds left in the period, Beydoun snared Mark Senden’s attempt on a two-on-one rush.

Shane McMahan drew Fargo back within one goal at 6:58 of the third period, squeezing a shot between Beydoun and the post at his left after the Force had controlled a faceoff.  Beydoun stopped Fargo’s other ten third period chances and made 30 total saves during the win.

Mike Anderson and Shane Bowers sealed the result with empty net goals.  Anderson’s came at 18:22 after his first try rebounded to him off the end wall.  Then with 23.1 seconds remaining, Bowers escaped the defensive zone by bouncing a puck to himself of the boards at center ice and swooping in to deposit his chance into the back of the open cage.

The series moves to North Dakota for Game Three on Tuesday.  Follow the action on radio from 1650 The Fan or with live video streaming via HockeyTV.
