Postgame Recap: Hawks Win With Scoring Bursts

Three goals in the first and three goals in the third gave the Waterloo Black Hawks all the offense they needed for a 6-2 win against the Fargo Force at Young Arena on Friday.

Waterloo achieved a period’s worth of offense in a 1:11-span during the opening frame.  Nick Swaney scored from pointblank range just outside the crease at 4:14.  On the ensuing shift, Kevin Charyszyn batted in his own rebound just 19 seconds later.  The visitors lifted starting netminder Matt Murray at 5:25 when Swaney scored again on a pass which came to him across the top of the crease from Shane Bowers.

A Force power play yielded the only goal in the second period.  Blake Lizotte sped up the left wing and through the circle, cutting from there across the net-mouth to flip in his chance at 14:24.

In the third, Waterloo began to widen the margin at 5:24 during a power play.  Garrett Wait came from behind the Force net to lift a backhander over the shoulder of Ryan Bischel.  Bowers added on after just 1:26 had passed, finding the net from the left circle after navigating across the slot.  Then with a two-man advantage at 9:44, Bailey Conger went to the net to stuff the puck across the goal line for the Hawks’ finally tally of the night.

A miscue in the defensive zone with 5:02 remaining allowed Lizotte to snap a shot between the pipes for the final goal of the game.  The increasingly scrappy affair ended with 81 penalty minutes distributed between the two teams.
