Draft Confirms Tomorrow’s NHL Stars Skate in Waterloo
Four members of the Waterloo Black Hawks were chosen during the 2017 NHL Draft in Chicago on Friday and Saturday.
Shane Bowers, Mikey Anderson, Nick Swaney, and Dylan Samberg were each called among the 217 selections by the top teams in professional hockey. Together, the four Hawks appeared in 197 United States Hockey League regular season or playoff games in 2016/17, a total higher than any other USHL team operating under the league’s standard roster parameters.
“Black Hawks fans know the game; they know that they had the chance to see some exceptional players last season and for the last many years,” said Vice President of Sales and Marketing Joe Greene. “Year-in and year-out P.K. O’Handley, Shane Fukushima, the assistants, and the scouts bring some exceptional athletes to Waterloo, and days like Friday and Saturday make you wish the 2017/18 season was here right now.”
Waterloo fans watched Bowers skate in all 60 regular season games, plus six postseason contests before he was picked 28th overall by the Ottawa Senators in Round One on Friday. That draft position trailed only Brock Boeser (23rd, 2015 Vancouver Canucks) and Peter Ferraro (24th, 1992, New York Rangers) as the third-highest in Waterloo history. Bowers will attend Boston University next fall.
The other three Hawks 2017 NHL Draft selections are future members of the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. Dylan Samberg (2nd Round, Winnipeg Jets), Mikey Anderson (4th Round, Los Angeles Kings), and Nick Swaney (7th Round, Minnesota Wild) each have commitments to the Bulldogs program; each was selected on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the 2017/18 Black Hawks roster is currently being forged from a new group of players preparing to impress NCAA and NHL scouts. Waterloo’s first regular season game during the new campaign will be in October; the complete USHL schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
